The Newsblog is an experimental news service written by journalism students and tutors at Cardiff School of Creative & Cultural Industries.

As part of our online journalism teaching, we are getting to grips with the world of web news writing, content management systems and the blogosphere.

We have seen how bloggers have risen up to challenge news organisations, and, in WordPress, Newsblog is powered by one of the best pieces of dedicated weblog software there is.

But there is nothing about blog software that prohibits the writer from publishing stories in the conventional, inverted-pyramid style so beloved of newspapers and mainstream online news outlets. That’s why we’re calling this is a “newsblog” - it does both jobs.

What we can learn from the blogosphere is that passionate individuals covering niche topics often produce highly detailed coverage in their field.

To that end, each student here has chosen a particular subject to cover in depth on his or her own newsblog, with material from each contributing to an overall, single product.
